The exhibition is a result of the research project AIDA II, Archives as Actors, based at Sami University. Based on our experiences with the Arctic Indigenous Arts and Design Archives (AIDA) project, which is led by Ájtte, the Swedish Mountain and Sami Museum in Jokkmokk, the Sami Archives in Inari, and Sami University (SA), it aims to samify the personal archives of duodji practitioners and Sami artists. The Ájtte and Sami Archives want these collected archives to remain in their possession, and the work of the Sami University has been to discover how the archives can be used as a basis for designing new works.

Of the exhibition’s three participants, Berit Kristine Andersen Guvsám, Laila Susanna Kuhmunen, and Gunvor Guttorm, Berit and Laila display their reflections on the collected archives, which present different interpretation possibilities.

From these different perspectives, the exhibition emphasizes how to look at communication as a basis of life. It is important for people to to sustain their culture and way of life. One can communicate in several ways: with people, with the environment, with materials, and with the soil, making it an important component of sustainability.

Communication means using our senses and knowledge to interact both with others and with the earth. It happens when you take the time to do it, and observation decreases in order to fully engage in the experience.
